Here’s Amperesand! This electronics startup just raised $12.45M seed to innovate transformers that could make electric vehicle (EV) charging more efficient.

  • Transformers reduce high-voltage electricity from power plants to lower-voltage electricity that is used to power factories, offices, and homes.

Investor check. Temasek’s Xora Innovation and Material Impact co-led the round, while TDK Ventures and Foothill Ventures joined in!

Conventional transformers are great—but solid-state transformers (SSTs) are even better.

Amperesand’s silicon carbide SSTs are more efficient, flexible, and resilient than traditional transformers. Oh, and they also don’t need extra equipment to regulate voltage and frequency.

  • They can address voltage fluctuations and harmonic distortions to ensure stable and reliable energy.
  • Oh, and since SSTs can manage real-time, bidirectional power flow, it’s also great for optimizing the use of renewable energy, energy sources, EV-fast charging deployments, and more!

Why it matters. Ensuring that power grids are stable is incredibly important, especially when Singapore is beginning to transition to EVs.

  • And the good news? Their tech is scalable to fit the needs of different locations.

SG, represent. Scientists in the Energy Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore developed the tech!

💡 What’s with the $$$?

With the new funds, they’ll focus on commercializing their SST technology. They’re planning to deliver the first units to the US and Singapore next year.

  • Amperesand is focused on serving EV charging companies to power their ports for now.
