From waste to worth. Here's Alterpacks! Founded in 2019, they've just raised a $1M pre-seed to turn food waste into sustainability solutions.

♻️ You're so plastic

Their first task? Fight single-use plastics. They've created their own biodegradable and home-compostable material to replace the plastic food containers we all end up throwing away.

• The main culprit is takeaway packaging, which dominates single-use plastics and is used more and more thanks to COVID and the rise of food delivery.

🧐 How it works

Their product is made of "spent grains" (basically, the waste product left after grains like malt and barley are processed into things like Milo). Their product upcycles this food waste into 100% plant-based and natural reusable food containers like bento boxes, rectangular food boxes and more.

• These grains typically go to landfills, are used as composed or put into animal feed.

It checks all the boxes. It works just as well as single-use plastics (if not better), and it's great for the environment and reduces waste. I mean, it's made of waste, after all!

• Yes, it's also reusable. 100% natural, FDA and SFA certified, microwave and freezer safe, plant-based, eco-friendly, and won't leak, dent or spill.

Now, they're working with different F&B businesses, converters and manufacturers to create tailor-made, sustainable packaging solutions made of food waste at scale.
