$80M to build scalable apps better and faster

Supabase

Your friend in engineering is going to be a Supafan. Say hey to Supabase. This Singapore and US-based startup just raised an $80M Series B! They help developers build scalable apps and projects faster and more reliably.

  • How? They're building an open-source alternative to services like Google's Firebase. (Not techy? We'll explain all this in a bit!)
  • Supafast organic growth. They've grown 1900% in the last 12 months to 80,000+ developers who have created 100,000+ databases.

Who cashed in? The round was led by Felicis Ventures. Coatue, Lightspeed and Square Peg also joined the round.

🧐  A little bit of background

Firebase is a set of tools to build apps and manage infrastructure on top of the Google Cloud platform. It's been around for around ten years, helping engineers avoid hassle, write less code and save time!

  • Tools include solutions for authentication (app sign-in), databases, storage, ML and more.

⚡️  Supabase's Supapowers

They won't copy Firebase feature-by-feature. They're focused on database and started by building several similar core tools of Firebase (but made even better).

They have a major thing Firebase doesn't have — it's open-source! ✨ Oh, and some enterprises (and people) may shy away from Firebase, while Supabase is scalable and enterprise-ready.

  • Open-source is growing in popularity, and developing with open-source comes with benefits.
  • Some may have concerns with performance, complexity, cost or data privacy with Firebase.

💰  What's with the $$$?

They're looking to double the team, develop the platform focusing on enterprise features and execute their go-to-market strategy.
