Clean air, please! Here’s Bioniqa, a cleantech startup that’s developing carbon capture technology to solve the air quality issue in Indonesia. And they just raised some fresh funds

  • Launched in 2023, they claim that their tech has improved outdoor air quality by 60% to 80% in an area of 150 square meters within 24 hours.

Investor check. Bali Investment Club led the round.

  • The terms of the deal were undisclosed.

🇮🇩 Big picture

There’s an air pollution crisis in Jakarta right now—and experts say it’s already causing a rise in respiratory illnesses and deaths in northern Java (including Jakarta).

Earlier this August, Jakarta’s air pollution levels worsened and it was named the ‘most polluted city in the world’, according to IQAir.

  • The smog is caused by coal-fired plants, exhausts from vehicles and motorcycles, and factories.
  • So far, the government has been weighing in on imposing pollution taxes. But people are demanding more action.

🍀 Hello, Bioniqa

Bioniqa develops algae-based carbon capture technology that absorbs CO2 emissions from the atmosphere and converts it into carbon and oxygen credits.

  • They’ve deployed their units to childcare centers in the Jakarta area, and their goal is to install their tech in large schools in more cities.
  • They’re targeting residential and vertical apartments, office buildings, retail spaces, as well as government facilities and high-traffic public spaces.

🗺️ What the future holds?

They’ll open a laboratory and algae plantation. Oh, they’ll also increase their photobioreactor capabilities through IoT tech.
