Goin' solo (GP) again: iSeed SEA's Wing Vasiksiri raises second fund

February 7, 2023
Wing Vasiksiri

We're sure you've seen iSeed SEA listed as an investor in several of our articles. And no, it's not your traditional VC firm — it's actually a solo GP (General Partner) fund run by just one person, Wing Vasiksiri!

Now, he's launching his second solo GP fund, a new seed-stage fund called WV Fund II.

  • A solo GP fund is a fund with only one GP as the sole decision-maker and public face.
  • This second fund brings his total assets under management across both funds to $14M.

Who joined in on the fun(d)? Institutional investors include Republic Capital, EGR Partners (Elisabeth de Rothschild's family office), Kamco Invest and Central Pattana!

  • Individual LPs: Dug Song (Founder and SEO, Duo Security), Albert Wenger (Managing Partner, USV) & Susan Danziger, Gokul Rajaram (Doordash, Square), Kum Hong Siew (ex-COO, Airbnb China) and several operators from Dropbox, Discord, and Github.

💸 He's not just Wing-ing it

Across his two funds, the 30 startups in his portfolio have raised $85M+ in follow-on funding from investors like:

  • We're sure you know who they are. Sequoia Capital, Y Combinator, Alpha JWC, AC Ventures, East Ventures, Jungle Ventures, Openspace Ventures, Monk's Hill Ventures and Golden Gate Ventures.

Some portfolio companies? Dat Bike, Skuad, Virtual Internships, Upmesh, Mio, Base and HD. (Yup, you've seen them on BackScoop before!)

🤔 Think you're a good fit?

The main markets are Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. But Wing also looks into the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand!

  • He's sector-agnostic. Though, he does look at the large contributors to GDP in each country.
  • Some interesting sectors to him? Fintech (payments and infrastructure), gaming and climatetech.

Money talk. He usually puts in checks of around $100k–$500k based on whether he's the lead investor and the company's valuation.

🔍 Zoom out

Solo GP funds are still new to SEA, but they're getting more and more popular — and possibly, attractive for founders like you and I.

  • Big and small. These funds can be a few million, but some solo GPs from Europe and the US manage more money than institutional VC funds. Oren Zeev, Elad Gil, Josh Buckey and Harry Stebbings manage funds with hundreds of millions.
  • Move fast, stay close. There's only one decision-maker, so investments can close in just days (or hours)! Plus, founders have a direct relationship with the GP (instead of tons of employees).
