Ice Breakers with Giorgi Khubua

October 12, 2023

Giorgi Khubua is the co-founder and Managing Director of MEDEA Biopharma, a German biotech company that specializes in the development of a new generation of sustainable and eco-friendly antibacterial solutions based on bacteriophages (phages), designed to solve the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance.

MEDEA Biopharma recently won the BETA prize from the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition in Singapore, a global startup event.

👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

We develop new generation of sustainable antibacterial solutions based on bacteriophages as alternatives to chemical antibiotics and harmful pesticides.

Bacteriophages are natural bacterial killers, which are highly specific and without side effects. Our first focus is the agriculture industry, animal-care in particular.

🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

MEDEA Biopharma is my second company I co-founded.

I founded my first startup at the age of 22 while still being a student and sold it back in 2020.

🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

The current phase of my career stands as its most remarkable highlight. I am the co-founder of an innovative biotech company together with an exceptional team.

Together, we are on a mission to address one of the world's most pressing health issues—antimicrobial resistance. Our product has the potential to make a significant positive impact on a global scale.

Recently, our efforts were recognized as we emerged victorious in the highly esteemed Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition in Singapore, triumphing over 1K competitors. This accomplishment not only validates our dedication but also propels us further toward our goal.

🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

I'm closely watching developments in tailored, sustainable and natural products within the biotech space this year. I believe they will revolutionize the industry.

💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Resilience, stay curious, find a great team, and build robust connections—in the dynamic realm of the biotech industry, durability, adaptability, and a strong network are crucial.

🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

I could talk endlessly about aviation, astronomy, and fragrances—my true passions and hobbies.

🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?

I would say Interstellar by Christopher Nolan.

🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

I don't really like ice creams.
