Jeffrey Liu is the co-founder and CEO of Jenfi, a financial technology company that offers revenue-based financing to help digital-native businesses in Southeast Asia fund their marketing and growth to scale up.
Before Jenfi, he was the co-founder and CEO of GuavaPass, one of the largest fitness subscription services in Asia and the Middle East.
👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?
At Jenfi, we help e-commerce and digital companies grow faster by giving them money to spend on their Facebook and Google ads (and anything else that helps bring them more customers) in exchange for a small percentage of their future sales.
🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?
Some surprising tidbits:
1) Growing up, I was a bit of a nomad, having lived in five different countries
2) The first time I used Groupon was to go skydiving half off
3) I placed ninth at the US national junior chess championships
🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
I co-founded GuavaPass, which was my first startup as a founder. It was an incredible journey where we launched and operated in 12 markets across Asia and the Middle East. We became a recognizable brand in the aspirational fitness and wellness space.
🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?
The Metaverse. There's so much absurdity and hype around this space that it's hard not to pay attention to the various possibilities of what our future could look like.
💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?
At YC, we were taught the mantra to "make something people want". To get there, the journey includes building and breaking things along the way. You know you've done something right when you get your first customer telling you to fix a bug on your site.
🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?
Anything that is thought-provoking. One of my favorite blogs is Wait But Why.
🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?
Two and a Half Men
🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?
Matcha green tea or coconut depending on the mood
