Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Jeshua Choong

September 27, 2022

Jeshua Choong is the founder and CEO of carching, a Malaysian startup that's here to help you earn while you're on your daily drives.

👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

Carching helps you unlock more value from every KM traveled with your car.

Whether you are heading to work, stuck in heavy traffic or looking for parking, our tech provides solutions to help you generate cash flow or use your time more efficiently. All these seamlessly integrate into your every drive!

🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

I was quite entrepreneurial at a very young age. I recall selling simple sketches of Titanic on pieces of paper for $0.05 when I was eight years old.

In high school, my biggest return was flipping pizzas during a carnival. I bought 30 extra large pizzas with a buy-1-get-1 deal, requested that they slice it to 10 slices instead of 8 and sold each slice at a premium.

Life was easier then. Maybe I should start flipping shares of the company.

🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Every chapter of my career has its moment. Today, I'm glad to have a team of people who trust and believe in what we do at carching.

🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

Literally, space! The next frontier. Not forgetting CRISPR, electric and autonomous vehicles or renewables.

If you add all these trends up, essentially, it is about extending lives beyond earth. What an exciting time to be alive!

💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

I think constant self-check and self-realization are important.

Always know what your SWOTs are (no need to list them down, having a clear mental note of each piece would do) and find ways to fill up those gaps fast to position yourself and your company in the best way possible.

🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

I find the ones that last for hours are the ones where I play the role of the devil's advocate, challenging the other party's views, reasoning or beliefs.

🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?

I have a bad habit of binge-watching an entire series in one go (e.g., all seasons of HIMYM, Suits, Stranger Things, GoT, Lost). Once in a while, I do appreciate some thought-provoking A24s or heart-warming Disney animations.

🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

I'll go nuts for pistachio! It has the perfect balance of texture (creamy + velvety) and taste (rich + fragrant). Any other plain-vanilla options are invalid.
