Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Meghna Mohan

March 15, 2023

Meghna is the founder of The Kebabsmith, a gourmet frozen kebab company helping simplify lunch box and meal plan ideas around Singapore.

In the last fifteen years, she has run two other companies. She was so eager to start The Kebabsmith during the pandemic that she started it as a pilot from my home kitchen. Soon after, Kebabsmith moved to a food factory, obtained all the licenses from SFA, and started scaled operations. Their products are now available on large marketplaces in Singapore and receive inquiries even from international markets.

👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

We manufacture gourmet frozen kebabs and snacks without any preservatives, MSG, or artificial flavors.

🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

One thing that I find a bit funny and flattering is that we make Indian frozen kebabs here in Singapore, and people take them back to India.

We started making them here as Singapore does not import meat products from India. But we often hear from customers saying that their family visited and have liked and taken our products back to India (and also Dubai, US & Thailand)!

🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

There's no one incident that comes to mind, but it's always heartwarming to get messages from customers or run into people who have tried your products and take the time to tell you that they like them.

🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

Cell-based meats. I'm intrigued and a bit wary.

💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Act with conviction: When starting a business, a lot of people will give you advice. Learn to trust your instinct and take only the relevant information. If you believe something will work, have the conviction to go ahead with your idea.

Secondly, be relatable and humble with your employees. Help out wherever there's a need, which will help gain their respect. The success of a company depends on a good team, after all.

🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

I can talk about my kids for hours. My kids are 4 & 6 and are always up to something. They're my biggest food critics.

🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?

I'm currently watching Schitt's Creek and loving it. I also love to binge-watch food shows.

🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

Hmm that's a tough one. It's a tie between Pistachio and Rum & Raisin.
