Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Rafael Jouwena

May 17, 2022

Rafael Jouwena is the Co-founder and CEO of Cocotel. They're a getaway hotel chain in the Philippines that helps independent owners with operations, finances, technology and digital marketing.

👋🏼  How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

We help independent hotels and resorts with technology, digital marketing and operations.

🧐  What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

I didn't have any experience in the hospitality industry before Cocotel — I was actually working in investment and financial services. However, I've learned a lot about hospitality thanks to my fellow co-founders and supportive Cocoteliers.

🏆  What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Travel and tourism were the most affected sectors during the pandemic, which includes our company. After almost two years of restructuring and reorganization, we survived the pandemic and are now stronger than ever.

We are currently the biggest getaway hotel chain in the Philippines, and we are starting to expand to Australia as well! Also, we're profitable right now.

🔍  What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

I believe the most affected industries during the pandemic will have the strongest recovery, and I think now is the best time to invest before these industries fully recover.

💼  What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Don't give up, and don't lose hope. Everything is possible when you work hard for it!

🗣  What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

Hotels and investments!

🎥  What's your favorite movie/TV show?

Shark Tank and Modern Family FTW!

🍨  What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

Any ice cream flavors that have the word chocolate in them!
