Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Simon Torring

March 17, 2023

Simon is the Co-founder of Cube Asia, an analytics company that helps consumer brands and retailers take the guess-work out of e-commerce growth with fresh and reliable insights, benchmarks, and data-driven recommendations.

Simon has spent the last ten years in Southeast Asia, with stints in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Before starting Cube Asia, he worked at Luxola, Sephora, and McKinsey.

👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

I lead marketing, sales, and customer success at Cube Asia, an e-commerce analytics company my co-founder Sarab and I started last year.

We're here to help consumer brands and retailers take the guess-work out of e-commerce growth by delivering useful insights, benchmarks, and recommendations every month.

My day-to-day schedule varies a lot, but the most valuable hours are the ones I spend with our customers to help tweak and adjust our product for their needs.

The coolest part of my job is when we can deliver a data point, or insight that our customers didn't even think was possible, like estimating their top competitors' sales on TikTok Shop last month.

🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

I'm the co-founder of a data analytics company, but I'm not very technical at all - in fact, I barely passed high school math back in Denmark. Luckily the rest of our team more than makes up for that, and I get to learn something new every day.

🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

I got the chance to start and build Sephora's omnichannel team in the region in 2017. As someone who has previously only worked in e-commerce, spending time in stores helped me understand and fall in love with retail. It was so much fun.

🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

Our business is to translate large and complex proprietary data sets into insights and recommendations that busy people can immediately grasp and make sense of. For that reason, I'm closely watching the generative AI space - I can't wait for software that can fully automate our memos and slide decks so we can spend more time with our customers!

💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Aggressively seek out mentors, find a smart boss to work for, and work like hell for a couple of years. The rest will take care of itself, and you'll get more balance along the way.

🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

Southeast Asia's changing e-commerce landscape (I'm not very fun at parties)

🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?

I love Succession and can't wait for the new season later this year. Some of my favorite movies are Lawrence of Arabia and Apocalypse Now.

🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake
