Ice Breakers

Ice Breakers with Stephanie Stadler

August 30, 2023

Stephanie Stadler is the co-founder and CMO of Matida, a Vietnam-based personalized pregnancy app, which offers a fun and easy way to navigate the journey of becoming a parent.

Launched in 2023, Matida has joined Iterative’s Summer Batch 23. They’re currently looking into expanding into more verticals beyond pregnancy.

👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech?

I am an early-stage startup enthusiast currently building an app to support young Vietnamese families on their journey to becoming parents.

Our Matida app is highly personalized, fun to use, and full of knowledge from medical experts as well as experienced mothers who share their stories.

Pregnancy, as well as parenting, comes with life-changing challenges and insecurities. However there are currently no apps on the Vietnamese market that offer fully personalised support solutions targeted to the new generation of parents.

The content available now is still heavily based on text and provides one generic customer journey not addressing the unique concerns of individual parents. Matida is here to change that!

At Matida I am responsible for all marketing and growth topics, ranging from new customer acquisition to retention.

🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us?

I spent more than five years working for Rocket Internet Ventures. While Rocket Internet has its fair share of critics, I highly appreciate my time there, as the learnings I gained and the network I formed have both been invaluable.

Something else that people often find interesting is the fact that I moved from Germany to Vietnam in 2018 without any ties to the country or a job lined up. Taking risks is not something that scares me.

🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Co-founding my first venture MyStorage in Ho Chi Minh City. MyStorage is Vietnam's first tech-enabled storage solution and has taught me the value of innovation, resilience, and turning a bold idea into a reality.

Today, MyStorage runs five warehouses in HCMC and is about to expand to further cities.

🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year?

I am currently very interested in femtech. It’s fascinating to see the number of startups being founded with the goal of solving the unique challenges faced by women, ranging from fertility to postpartum to menopause.

There are so many smart women building ventures and I am very excited to see the next developments in this space.

💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry?

Be obsessed with your customers. Analyze their behavior and talk to them as much as you can to really understand their pain points.

Once you understand what drives them, you can find solutions. Talking to customers needs to be a founder’s priority and can not be delegated.

🗣 What's one thing you can keep talking about for hours?

Traveling. I am a sucker for exploring new countries and seeing/doing things I haven’t yet experienced. I love mountains, islands, unusual hotels, new food, etc.

Apart from that, a lot of my conversations at the moment also revolve around early-stage investors, pitching, and the feedback we have gotten. It is a crazy journey and you need to be super thick-skinned to stay sane.

🎥 What's your favorite movie/TV show?

Entourage, Mad Men, Game of Thrones.

🍨 What's your go-to ice cream flavor?

Anything made with nuts—pistachio, peanut, walnut.

FYI. We've edited this interview for clarity.
