Malaysia’s GreatAsic raises $6.9M Series A

Here’s GreatAsic! They’re a Malaysia-based fabless chip design company, and they’ve just raised a $6.9M Series A.

Investor check. Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia and India led the round, while Ehsan Kapital and Gobi Partners joined in.

📲 Chipping in

According to Vertex, the investment follows Malaysia’s strategy to develop their front-end chip design capabilities.

  • Malaysia is known for their local firms that can fabricate, assemble, and test chips (remember FusionAP), but they want to move beyond assembling chips to actually building them.

That’s fab. Fabless chip manufacturers design chips but outsource their fabrication or production to outside manufacturers.

🇲🇾 Where GreatAsic comes in

GreatAsic designs custom Application-specific Integrated Circuit (ASICs) and AI System-on-Chip platforms for data center, edge AI, and automotive markets.

  • They’re one of the first Malaysian design firms to receive Arm Holdings’ semiconductor intellectual property.
  • This grants them access to Secure Arm Flexible Access and Arm Neoverse Compute Subsystems tokens, important tools for companies to build SoCs for cloud and edge compute.

🍵 What’s next?

They’ll use the $$$ to hire more engineers, expand their operations, and accelerate development of their silicon projects.
