Enter a new world of flavor with Prefer! This Singapore-based foodtech startup uses fermentation to create affordable and sustainable flavors and ingredients.

  • Now, they just raised a $4.2M Pre-Series A!
  • This brings their total raised to $6.2M.

Investor check. At One Ventures and Chancery Hill Capital co-led the round. Forge Ventures also joined in!

  • They raised a $2M seed last year.

🫘 Soy you think you know coffee

Prefer ferments and roasts rice and soy to create bean-free coffee grounds, making their product a more sustainable option than regular coffee products.

But that isn’t it. They also sell ready-to-drink oat lattes! Oh, and they also just commercialized their products through food service channels like Melvados, a Singaporean food business.

How is it more sustainable? Coffee production has a huge carbon footprint. Producing 1kg of coffee requires 29kgs of carbon dioxide!

  • According to Prefer, their coffee has up to 85% lower emissions and is 50% more affordable than the current market prices of traditional Arabica.
  • They supply fast-moving consumer goods brands, manufacturers, retailers, and flavor houses.

New product alert. They recently launched soluble bean-free coffee powder and a cocoa-free cocoa powder!

📈 The growth plan

Prefer plans to scale their pilot production facility through toll manufacturers in key markets.

  • They’ll also double down on R&D on cocoa flavor development and expand global partnerships in Asia.

Their collabs so far? Prefer currently works with Ajinomoto Co. in Thailand and The Coffee Ferm in Thailand and Australia.
