Protecting our Blue Planet through waste management

August 11, 2023

Did you hear? We’re currently in the era of global boiling, not global warming. Yikes!

We know the usual suspects. Greenhouse gasses, overconsumption, and waste, waste, waste.

But here’s a solution. Blue Planet collects waste from landfills, sorts garbage, and turns waste materials into new products!

  • How? They acquire companies (like Malaysia’s Globecycle and the United Kingdom’s Smart Creative) to widen their services.
  • Headquartered in Singapore, they’re active across India, Malaysia, and the UK.

Investor check. Malaysian Private Equity firm Bintang Capital.

  • The amount raised was undisclosed.
  • They raised $25M from Japan’s Nomura back in 2020.

🗑️ One man’s trash

Someone’s got to do the dirty work, but what if there’s just too much trash? Blue Planet has a number of solutions that help them collect trash and recover precious materials from waste.

  • They clear overfilled waste dumps and contaminated areas by analyzing the waste composition and managing them based on their different characteristics.
  • They can also recover high-value materials—gold, silver, palladium–from electronic waste.

🧱 It’s a process

They’re not just cleaning landfills or contaminated areas, they also turn trash into something new!

  • They have units that process food scraps and garden clippings into biogas.
  • Oh, and they can turn inert waste (rocks, gravel, glass, ceramics, etc.) into geo-polymer concrete, which can be used as building blocks.
  • Finally, they have a solution that processes low-grade plastic into usable fuel oil.

🌊 What the future holds?

Blue Planet’s going the $$$ to expand their teams and improve their waste management tech.

  • Run the numbers! They claim to have processed 3.3M metric tons of waste in 2022.
  • A long way to go. For context, Malaysia generated about 38K metric tons of waste a day in 2021.
