Are you hurt? Here’s to better wound care. Singapore-based biomaterials startup Bioactivx develops synthetic, bio-inspired skin substitutes to help treat skin wounds.

  • Now, they’ve just raised a $1.43M seed!

Investor check. Cocoon Capital led the round, while global strategic investors joined in.

😷 Healing burn wounds

According to the World Health Organization, around 11M people suffer from burn injuries every year, and 180K die because of it.

  • The most common way to treat burn patients is to do skin grafts, which use animal-derived collagen.
  • But…this comes with high infection risks and ethical and cultural barriers.

🌱 Where Bioactivx comes in

Bioactivx’ approach uses a synthetic regenerative platform that mimics the body’s natural healing process without relying on animal materials.

  • Their Bioactiv Matrix method means no infection risk, no need for cold chain storage, and no cultural restrictions.
  • In some cases, porcine (pork) or bovine (cattle)-derived products are restricted for cultural or religious reasons.

🩸 What’s next?

They’ll push for the commercialization of Bioactiv Matrix and also seek global regulatory approval.

  • They’ll also develop new products, Bioactiv Foam (for acute and chronic wounds) and Bioactiv Cellulose (for ulcers and long-term care).
  • Oh, and they’re going to scale their Singapore facility to ISO 13485 standards.
