Viu heads out of the metro to compete with Netflix and Disney+

April 6, 2023
Viu

Someone grab the popcorn! This video-streaming app has more monthly active users in Southeast Asia than Netflix does in the region. No kidding.

It's Hong Kong's Viu, and they're betting on the millions of viewers outside Southeast Asia's big cities to compete with Netflix and Disney+!

  • Launched in 2015, they operate in 16 markets!
  • They hit $206M in revenue last year and have 66M+ users.

🗺️ Different place, different taste

This rural strategy focuses on viewers looking for localized content they can watch on their mobile phones and tablets with minimal load on the WiFi network!

  • Lots of potential customers! Around 50%–80% of the population in countries like Thailand and the Philippines don't live in big cities.
  • Competitors like Netflix focus more on content that customers would stream on TVs, not mobile.

Asian flavor. Unlike Netflix and Disney+, they focus on specifically offering the best Asian content — you'll find dramas from Korea, China, the Philippines and even Vietnam.

In practice. They subtitle, dub and promote their content in local languages (and even dialects) to capture this audience!

  • They have dubbed content into local dialects like Bisaya from the Philippines and Yaya from Northern Thailand.

Remake. They also do local remakes of international hits like Korean dramas. This localized content is released under their "Viu Original" brand.

🤑 Money matters

You can use Viu for free (as long as you can handle the ads) or pay for an ad-free experience without ads.

  • Fellow streaming giants cut their prices for Southeast Asia, but this hasn't affected business at Viu.
